You've played padel once or twice, you loved it, and now you're fed up with borrowing the club's tired old rackets. Good news: choosing your first racket is much simpler than the shop shelves make it look. This guide covers the four things that actually matter for a beginner, and the things you can safely ignore for now.
Short on time?
Our 60-second racket quiz asks four quick questions and recommends a racket for your level and budget.
1. Shape: start with a round racket
Padel rackets come in three main shapes, and the shape decides where the "sweet spot" sits: the area of the face that gives you a clean, comfortable hit.
- Round: the sweet spot sits low and central, so it's big and forgiving. Off-centre hits still go where you meant them to. Best for beginners.
- Teardrop: a balance of control and power. A good second racket, or a first racket if you've played a lot of tennis or squash.
- Diamond: the weight and sweet spot sit high up the head for maximum power on smashes. Harder to control and less forgiving, so one for experienced players.
SmashPad tip: if you're new, a round racket will make the game feel easier and help you build good habits quickly.
2. Weight: lighter is easier to learn with
Most adult padel rackets weigh roughly 340–375g. A few grams doesn't sound like much, but over a 90-minute game you'll feel it in your wrist and shoulder. As a beginner, a lighter racket is easier to swing, quicker to react with at the net and kinder on your arm. Heavier rackets give more power, but you only really benefit from that once your technique is consistent.
3. Feel: soft and forgiving beats stiff and powerful
Inside every padel racket is a foam core, covered by a face made from fibreglass or carbon. You don't need to know the science, just this:
- Softer rackets help the ball off the face with less effort and absorb more vibration. Great for beginners and for anyone worried about tennis elbow.
- Stiffer, high-carbon rackets give more control and power to players who swing hard and hit the ball cleanly, but feel harsh and unforgiving when you don't.
4. Budget: you don't need to spend £100+
It's tempting to buy the racket the pros use. Don't, yet. Expensive rackets are built for players with polished technique, and they often make the game harder for beginners. A sensible budget for a first racket is around £40–£100.
SmashPad tip: spend the difference on a few lessons or extra court time. That will improve your game far more than a pricier racket.
What can you ignore for now?
Carbon ratings (3K, 12K, 18K), balance points measured in millimetres and "hybrid" marketing labels can all wait. They matter once you've been playing regularly for a few months and know what you like. For your first racket, shape, weight, feel and budget are enough.

Quick FAQ
Can I use a tennis racket for padel?
No. Padel rackets are solid (no strings), shorter and perforated with holes, and padel courts and balls are designed around them. Most clubs require a proper padel racket.
Do I need padel shoes straight away?
Not on day one, but court shoes with good grip make a big difference to movement and safety on artificial grass. Avoid running shoes, which offer little side-to-side support.
How long does a padel racket last?
For a beginner playing once or twice a week, a decent racket should last a year or more. Keeping it in a padded cover, not leaving it in a hot or freezing car, and trying not to scrape it along the floor or clash it against the glass all help.
Should I buy a cheap racket first and upgrade later?
Yes, that's what we'd recommend. Learn on something light and forgiving, then upgrade once you know whether you prefer control or power.
